Olivia stepped inside the front door, quietly closing it behind her. Hushed tones echoed from the kitchen as Jonathan quickly wrapped up his phone conversation with his whore.

"I'm sorry, but I can't. Look, I know this isn't easy, but I want you to know the last thing I wanted to do was hurt you. I love you. Hello?"

By the time Olivia made it to the archway to the kitchen area, Jonathan had slammed his brand-new phone on the table, wiping tears from his eyes.

Olivia shook her head, fighting the growing grimace on her face. Jonathan fucked around, and Olivia was supposed to pity him? But it was fucking working. Yet another reason to feel guilty. The weight pressed on her chest until she released an exhausted sigh.

"Jon," her voice softened. "You did the right thing."

Jonathan slammed his fist against her father's dining table, and the pair froze in silence as he stared at the laminate tabletop, avoiding Olivia's gaze.

"Don't," her husband's voice cracked. "Theresa just hung up on me. She was in tears because I told her it was all over. So, you call Emma. Now."

Olivia cleared her throat. "Eventually, you'll see this was the right thing. She—"

Jonathan punched the table, never lifting his eyes. "Do you understand how fucking exhausting it is being married to you? Yeah, I cheated, and I'm a piece of shit for that. I'll cop that one on the chin. But I lost a fucking son that night, too, Liv."

Olivia's face burned. "You don't get to—"

"I'm not done," Jonathan snapped, pounding the table again. "I lost Noah, too, and all our friends rallied to your side. But I was just the father. I had to pull my shit together for the funeral, and then it was back to work and looking after Emma. I know this hasn't been easy on you, and I've tried as hard as I can to shoulder the burden for you, but at least you had a chance to fucking fall apart."

Olivia always wanted a more honest relationship with her husband, but now it was staring her in the face, which only added to the weight on her shoulders.

"I held up my end of the bargain," Jonathan snapped. "I'm not saying another fucking word to you until you call our daughter and bring her back home."

Another electric shock spread through Olivia's brain like a bushfire. She winced, grabbing her temples. Jonathan rose from his seat with a loud scrape that might as well have been knives grating against her ears. Olivia rubbed her temples, trying to keep her shuddering eyes open.

"You're not gonna pull that headache shit with me. Call Emma. Take back all the horrible things you said to her."

Typical.

Jonathan always let his little princess off the hook for her shitty behaviour, and he wondered why she went out fucking married men while their wives were dying in hospital beds. Olivia kept her derisive snort in her head. Did Olivia get any recognition for her efforts to keep her family
